History of ORE development projects in Haiti since 1985: humanitarian aid, high-revenue tree crops, improved seeds and plant materials, marketing programs designed to improve environmental, agricultural and economic conditions in rural Haiti.

 

Program History

The following is a list of ORE major projects since 1985 to date. Many projects have been sustained and have evolving over nearly two decades.

2009 - 2011

2011-2012 • CSI (Cote Sud Initiative) - Integrated Development Program

  • Agricultural & Environmental activities: in five communes of the Southwest coastal area in Haiti: data collection for baseline assessment, crop varietal and diversification trials. UNEP (funding level US$238,000)

2010 - 2011• Humanitarian Relief Program:
Emergency program in response to the January 12th 2010 earthquake

  • Survivors evacuation from Port-au-Prince to Camp-Perrin
  • Relief program: feeding, medical, lodging, education support for over 250 families in Port-au-Prince and Camp-Perrin. (private funding $244,678) – Funded by ORE-USA

2009 - 2011 •  Fruit tree production and fruit processing & marketing

  • Mango Tree production and top-grafting, in two communes along the western coastal region of the South department. (CRS-MYAP program funding level US$150,000 2009-2011
  • Market Chain Enhancement Program (MarChE): Technical assistance to Mango, Coffee, Yam producer networks to strengthen these value chains in the South, South-East, Grand’Anse, Central Plateau and West departments of Haiti (USAID/CNFA,, funding level $185,000) 2009-2010

1995 – 2002 • High Value Fruit tree program

  • Trees program 1999-2002 Fruit tree production and fruits marketing Top-grafting and Production of grafted mango, avocado and citrus  seedlings in the South, West (Cul-de-sac and Leogane regions), South-East (Valle de Jacmel) Nippes (Paillant).   • Grafted Fruit Tree Program – 1996-1998,Topgrafting and Production of grafted high value fruit tree seedlings in the South, and extensive national Grafting training component to benefit several organizations nationwide. EU ( Funding level $700,000)

1995 – 2002 • Staple crops seeds improvement and maintenance program

  • Staple crops 1999-2001 Improved seeds maintenance, production and distribution: Post-Hurricane George Relief program to enable production in affected areas of the following crops: maize, bean, sorghum. Collaborative program with CIAT. (HGRP – PADF/USAID, funding level $1,390,000)

1993 – 1996 • High Value Fruit tree program

  • Grafted fruit tree program – 1995-1996 Top-grafting and Production of grafted mango seedlings to increase Madame Francis export variety in the South, West (Cul-de-sac and Leogane regions). UCG/IDB, funding level $500,000).

1993 – 1996 • Staple crops seeds

  • Staple crops Seeds Improvement and Multiplication Program – 1993-1996 Production of 770 MT of improved seeds of corn, bean and sorghum and training program for technicians and farmers in seed production, processing and storage. USAID Cooperative Agreement No. 521-0245-A-00-3003-00. Funding level $1,400,000.
1985 – 1992

1988 - 1992 • Targeted Watershed Management Project – PST

  • The project involved soil conservation, agroforestry and crop improvement linked to marketing initiatives designed to increase farmer income. It was implemented in the Macaya mountain range surrounding the national park and watershed areas in the south of Haiti. USAID Cooperative Agreement No 521-0191-A-00-8010-00. Funding level $2,600,000.

1985 – 1992 • Mango Improvement Program – 1988 - 1989

  • Diversification of mango production to boost exports with the promotion of orchards, plantations and individual trees grafted with commercial varieties in the mango producing areas neighboring Port-au-Prince; training in grafting of 400 farmers/technicians. USAID Grant No 521-0167-G-SS-0005-00.Funding level $630,000

1985 – 1988 • Grafted Fruit Tree Program

  • The project pioneered the widespread grafting of fruit trees in Haiti and was responsible for introducing a number of new commercial varieties of fruits. Extensive grafting of citrus, mango and avocado trees was designed to increase farmers’ income and for ecological benefits. USAID C/A No 521-0182-A-00-5028-00. Funding level $600,000
