Minisetting is a rapid propagation techniques which is used to quickly and inexpensively produce plant material, whether it is banana plantlets or germinated seeds for yam production. Banana plants and yams can be rapidly multiplied using minisetting to make healthy plantlets available to farmers on a commercially significant scale.

If you have a small quantity of a very good new banana or yam variety, the first thing is to produce lots of plant materials (seeds) for farmers. The best way to rapidly multiply your plant material is to use minisetting. This technique allows you to make new plantlets 10 times faster than through traditional methods. Also minisetts of yams tend to eliminate viral infestation than hamper yams plants under normal conditions.

ORE operates a small tissue culture laboratory to rapidly multiply improved disease free plant material.

Tissue Culture

ORE operates a small tissue culture laboratory to rapidly multiply improved disease free plant material. The tissue culture laboratory is used to produce healthy banana plantlets from selected commercial varieties for distribution to farmers using material selected from international and local sources. The focus is on reproducing commercial varieties of both cooking and eating bananas which are resistant to the Black Sigatoka. Trials have shown that improved, disease-free plants from the lab generate approximately twice the revenue of traditional materials.
